Father Ohrwalder was a member of the Austrian mission in Khartoum when the Mahdi, a religious leader who claimed to be the savior of Islam, launched a revolt against the Ottoman Empire. The Mahdi's forces captured Khartoum in 1885, and Father Ohrwalder was taken prisoner along with other Europeans and Egyptians.The book recounts Father Ohrwalder's experiences as a captive of the Mahdi's forces, including his initial imprisonment in Omdurman, his transfer to the Mahdi's camp at Jebel Gedir, and his eventual release in 1892. Father Ohrwalder describes the harsh conditions of his captivity, including the lack of food and water, the prevalence of disease, and the constant threat of violence. He also provides insights into the Mahdi's religious beliefs and political ideology, as well as the daily life of his followers.The book is based on Father Ohrwalder's original manuscripts, which were discovered in the Vatican archives in the 1980s.
