Black September's assault on the Israeli athletes shattered the illusion of Olympic innocence, and the botched rescue attempt at Fürstenfeldbruck turned tragedy into catastrophe. While Fischer rose as America's unlikely hero, the world mourned the slain athletes and realized that ideology could invade even the spaces built for unity.
