Skillfully interweaving the fictional adventures of the two American families with historical background information, i>An American Saga: 1507 to 2009 focuses on four distinct periods of American history: the French and Indian War, the 1840s, the 1890s, and the 1960s.
The intertwined adventures of Stuart and the Moreau/Monroe families of Port Huron, Michigan, begin in 1759 on the turbulent waters of Lake Cham-plain, as the French and Indian War heats up. In the years following the American Revolution, North America experiences a resurgence in religious activities, now referred to as the Second Great Awakening.
Soon, explosive growth creates demand for raw materials, and the harvest of Lake Huron area's rich forestlands begins. Eventually, however, the timber industry starts to feel the effects of economic downturn, and lumber mills begin to shut down on the lake. Fortunately, those seeking a restful holiday soon turn their eyes to the shores of Lake Huron, and a new industry is born.
In just a few decades, though, all that prosperity and comfort is crushed under the weight of the Great Depression, and the people of Port Huron once again struggle to find their way.
Over the decades, the two families live the full gamut of the American experience-war, murder, financial success and failure, romance, and tragedy-in the historic Michigan port city on Lake Huron, and they watch as it evolves from a once-sleepy lakeshore village to an important international port city.
