About the Artists: J.H. Dearle (1859-1932) began his long employment with William Morris's interiors firm in 1878. His talent for drawing didn't go unnoticed and he soon became tapestry apprentice to Morris himself. By 1890 he had become chief textile designer and in 1896, after Morris's death, he became Art Director of the entire firm. With their highly decorative yet naturalistic look, Dearle's patterns for wallpaper and textiles elevate nature to the realm of fine art and encapsulate the Arts and Crafts passion for beautifully handcrafted, everyday objects.
