Afghan Drummed takes its lead, perhaps, from the epic verse of old, to tell its tale in poetry, but almost immediately abandons any fixed poetic form, swinging wildly between rhyming couplets, free verse, blues songs and things stolen wholesale from Allen Ginsberg's Howl and Dylan's Tarantula. And as sagas go, it also throws out all sense of narrative structure, reeling between angry exclamations, acts of individualist revolt in the face of social oppression and angst-filled accounts of love and defeat. It is a tale that is rambling, raging and often obtuse - almost going out of its way to defy any easy interpretation. For all that, it does capture something of the emotional rollercoaster of being a rebellious teenager in 1980s Britain.
