The plot is in the backdrop of social and moral values that are the quintessence of contemporary India. Rita, the leading character has been delineated as an ambitious girl who works in an MNC as a Program Analyst. Her work deems it necessary for her to go abroad sometimes for her assigned project. This makes her break all social dogmas that her neighbours and aunts strictly adhere to. Her educational background, her characteristic traits and her ambition make her more prudent and percipient. In the meanwhile the childhood love of Rita and Amit, blossoms into a happy marriage. But their married life of happiness lasts for a short stint of four years. It develops a chasm on an issue that ultimately makes the two separated. The issue that triggers the perennial conflict between them is Rita's decision to abort the foetus she conceives. She defends her stance by bringing up a moral issue. Arguments and differences of opinion create a gulf. The climax of the story brings a hateful separation. But destiny has stored something else for them. The series of anecdotes and monologues of Rita and Amit unravel the subdued respect and love they nourished under the guise of their apparent intolerance for each other. Rita's rise to fame paves the opportunity for the two to be united once again rather amazingly. It is a matter of chance and a twist of fate. And the crux of the novel emerges with a happy tone that happens only at the end.
