The first steps in exploring geometric shapes is to have your child observe, recognize and name the shape. Then, you can expand the concept by looking at the lines that make up the shape. Focus on how the figure is drawn. Note the relationship of the lines to one another including the length, angle and placement. Having your child trace the lines with their finger is a good first step. Younger children can start with the flat plane, 2D shapes focusing on height and width, then, as they are ready, you can introduce solid 3D shapes, adding the concept of depth. Learning about geometric shapes, as well as finding them in the real world, will help develop your child's spatial sense, while also promoting their higher level thinking and problem solving skills.
