Northern Rocky Mountain wolves were native to Yellowstone when the park was established in 1872, but early views that cast them as dangerous vermin fueled aggressive predator-control campaigns. By the 1940s, wolves had been eliminated from the region. Their celebrated return half a century later launched a new era of research, public engagement, and controversy.
This comprehensive reference traces the prehistory, management, and ecology of the Yellowstone wolf. Historian-naturalist Paul Schullery brings together the voices of explorers, naturalists, park officials, tourists, lawmakers, and modern researchers to illuminate the story of what has become the world's most famous wolf population. The book also features numerous scientific studies of interest to wolf enthusiasts as well as scholars of western wildlife, conservation, and national park history. An afterword by Schullery reviews the latest developments in the recovery project.
