Written with clarity and respect by Michael Black Elk, this book widens the frame beyond the familiar, often simplified images of Plains Indians and nineteenth-century conflict, revealing a living nation shaped by language, kinship, ceremony, diplomacy, adaptation, and hard-earned endurance.
Rather than beginning where many popular accounts begin, with cavalry, famous battles, and the long shadow of Wounded Knee, this narrative reaches further back into the Lakota world before it was crowded by U.S. expansion and recorded chiefly through outsider eyes. It explores how identity forms over time, how communities move, and how relationships with neighbouring nations, trade networks, and shifting environments shaped the people the world would later call Lakota. It shows that history did not start when it was first written down in English. It existed already in winter counts, oral tradition, sacred teaching, and the lived memory carried forward through generations.
As the story moves onto the Great Plains, the book brings to life the dramatic transformations that followed the arrival of the horse, the central role of the buffalo, and the growth of Lakota influence across a vast landscape. This is a portrait of a sophisticated society with its own governance, moral responsibilities, and spiritual orientation, not a backdrop for someone else's frontier myth. It also confronts the catastrophic turning points that followed sustained contact with colonial powers, including the destabilising effects of disease, the tightening grip of trade dependency, and the rising pressure of American policy.
At the heart of this history stand the treaties, the promises, and the relentless ways power can be exercised through paperwork, boundaries, and law. Keepers of the Sacred Hills examines how agreements were made under profoundly different assumptions, how land could mean relationship to one side and property to the other, and how misunderstanding was often exploited until it became dispossession. It follows the escalation from negotiation into conflict, revealing how war, policy, and economic forces combined to dismantle independence by attacking its foundations, including the deliberate destruction of the buffalo herds and the forced reality of reservation life.
Most of all, this book returns again and again to the Black Hills, the spiritual centre of Lakota identity and one of the clearest moral fault lines in American history. Here, the clash is not only over territory, but over meaning itself. Gold rushes and industrial hunger collided with a sacred landscape tied to origin, prayer, and responsibility. The resulting struggle did not end with the nineteenth century. It continues through courtrooms, activism, community leadership, and the refusal to accept that money can replace what was taken.
Keepers of the Sacred Hills is not a story told only through well-known names, although the leaders who stepped into history's harshest light are treated with care and context. It is also the story of families, women's strength, spiritual continuity, and communities that endured policies designed to erase language and ceremony. It shows how survival became a daily discipline, how identity was preserved in ordinary acts of raising children and remembering the old ways, and how modern Lakota life continues to fight for self-determination while building futures that are both rooted and real.
