Bessie Among The Mountains is a novel written by Joanna H. Mathews. The story is set in the Appalachian Mountains during the late 19th century and follows the life of Bessie, a young girl who has grown up in poverty. Bessie's father is an alcoholic and her mother is often sick, leaving Bessie to take care of her younger siblings. Despite the challenges she faces, Bessie is determined to better her life and that of her family's. Bessie's life takes a turn when she meets a wealthy family who offer her a job as a governess for their children. Bessie takes the opportunity and moves to the city, where she experiences a completely different way of life. She learns new skills and gains an education, but also faces challenges and discrimination due to her humble background. Throughout the novel, Bessie learns the value of hard work, determination, and the importance of family. She also discovers the beauty of the mountains and the people who live there. The story is a heartwarming tale of a young girl's journey to overcome adversity and find her place in the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
