This book introduces trombonists to the fascinating sound world of Balinese music through the scales of Pelog and Selisir. Both are central to the gamelan tradition and offer unique tonal colors that expand the expressive possibilities of the trombone.
The Pelog scale is a seven-tone system, but in practice only five tones are often used, giving it a distinctive character that feels both ancient and fresh. Its intervals do not correspond exactly to Western tuning, which challenges the performer to explore new ways of hearing and intonation.
The Selisir scale, a subset of Pelog, is often described as more open, bright, and spiritual. Its limited set of tones creates a trance-like atmosphere, which can be especially effective when adapted for brass instruments like the trombone.
Through studies, exercises, and repertoire, this volume will help trombonists internalize the melodic shapes and modal colors of these Balinese scales. The goal is not only to imitate, but also to integrate these sonorities into a personal voice, blending Western brass tradition with the timeless beauty of Balinese music.
This is Vol.1, the beginning of a journey into cross-cultural exploration, where the trombone meets the shimmering resonance of the gamelan.
