The Bloody Tenant Yet More Bloody: By Mr. Cottons Endeavor To Wash It White In The Blood Of The Lamb is a book written by Roger Williams in 1652. The book is a response to John Cotton's defense of the Puritan doctrine of religious persecution, which Williams strongly opposed. In the book, Williams argues that the use of force to compel religious conformity is a violation of individual conscience and a denial of the freedom of worship. He also contends that the Puritan practice of punishing dissenters with fines, imprisonment, and even death is contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The title of the book is a reference to Cotton's earlier work, The Bloody Tenant Washed and Made White in the Blood of the Lamb, which defended the use of force to maintain religious orthodoxy. Williams' book is a passionate defense of religious liberty and a scathing critique of the Puritan establishment in colonial America. It remains an important work in the history of religious freedom and the development of American democracy. The Bloody Tenant Yet More Bloody: By Mr. Cottons Endeavor To Wash It White In The Blood Of The Lamb: Of Whose Precious Blood, Spilt In The Blood Of His Servants; And Of The Blood Of Millions Spilt In Former And Later Wars For Conscience Sake, That Most Bloody Tenant Of Persecution For Cause Of Conscience, Upon A Second Trial, Is Found Now More Apparently And More Notoriously Guilty.
