The Boy With the U. S. Survey by Francis Rolt-Wheeler is an engaging narrative that follows the journey of Roger Doughty, a young and enthusiastic boy eager to join the U.S. Geological Survey. The story begins with Roger's meeting with Mr. Rivers, an experienced Alaskan guide and geologist, who initially tries to dissuade him by emphasizing the hardships and rigorous demands of the work. However, Roger's determination and passion for adventure win over Mr. Rivers, who promises him a place in his future Alaskan expedition if he proves himself in the field. Roger's first assignment is with Mr. Field, who is in charge of the swamp drainage project in Minnesota. This project aims to transform vast areas of tamarack swamps into fertile farmland. Roger quickly learns the challenges of the work, including the physical demands of carrying heavy packs through difficult terrain and the technical aspects of surveying and drainage planning. Despite the grueling conditions, Roger's enthusiasm remains undiminished. The narrative also includes a humorous episode where Roger is initiated into the team through a snipe-shoot, a practical joke played on newcomers. This experience, along with the daily challenges of the survey work, helps Roger develop resilience and adaptability, essential traits for his future endeavors. Throughout the story, Rolt-Wheeler highlights the importance of perseverance, hard work, and the spirit of adventure. The book not only provides an insight into the life and work of the U.S. Geological Survey but also serves as an inspiring tale of a young boy's journey towards achieving his dreams.
