During the late 1800s, women living in the East found themselves in a quandary. The Civil War had taken the lives of many young men, and those not killed had left for the Western frontier to make their way in the new territories. Some women were left alone as widows, while others were facing a life of possible spinsterhood and poverty. And just as women in the East faced a shortage of marriageable men, men seeking their way out West were also bereft of suitable wives.
And so the business of mail order brides was born.
Seen as an unconventional yet perfectly reasonable way to find a wife, men in the West would often place an advertisement in newspapers like the Matrimonial Times, expressing their desire to marry and the benefits they had to offer. These men came from all walks of life-educated, poor, rich or simply adventurous-but they all had a common need. And the women who responded were also in need, as a woman without a husband could easily find herself in dire straits, in those times.
But with the promise of a home and family came the undeniable fact: the man and woman, regardless of intentions, were strangers to one another. And thrust into their lives together, each hoped for more than simply a spouse-they hoped to, possibly, find love.
In such scenarios we see true test of faith in a higher power as these brave women and hard working men hope and attempt to find true love and a meaningful life together.
