Burma, also known as Myanmar, has a long and interesting Hindu heritage that's intertwined with Buddhism. Even the country's name reflects this influence, as Burma is derived from Brahma Desha. The spread of Hinduism through ancient land and sea trade routes brought Indian art, architecture and culture to Burma, from temples like the 11th-century Nathlaung Kyaung dedicated to Vishnu in Bagan to the modern Hare Krishna movement. The Burmese poetic tradition of niti has roots in Hindu traditions, as do traditional Burmese law codes and royal ceremonies, blending aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindu festivals like Diwali or Thaipusam also reflect the Hindu heritage. This book explores the ancient links between the Hindu faith and the land of Burma, alongside Buddhism.
