In 1853, Richard Francis Burton set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca, an act forbidden to non-Muslims at the time. With his wife Isabel by his side, Burton disguised himself as a wandering dervish and made the journey through Arabia. The resulting book, 'Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah & Meccah, ' is a vivid and detailed account of this remarkable journey. This edition includes a preface by Stanley Lane-Poole and additional commentary and footnotes by Isabel herself, providing valuable context and insight into one of the most daring and influential adventures of the nineteenth century.
