Canaan is a novel written by Brazilian writer Graca Aranha, originally published in 1902 and later translated into English in 1920. The story is set in the city of Rio de Janeiro during the early 20th century and follows the life of a young man named Nilo Argolo, who is torn between his desire to live a life of luxury and his moral convictions. As Nilo navigates the complex social and cultural landscape of Rio de Janeiro, he encounters a variety of characters, including artists, intellectuals, and members of the upper class. Through his experiences, Nilo begins to question the values and beliefs of his society, ultimately leading him to a deeper understanding of himself and his place in the world. The novel explores themes of morality, social class, and the search for identity, and is considered a landmark work of Brazilian literature. It is often cited as an example of modernist literature due to its experimental narrative style and its use of stream-of-consciousness techniques. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
