Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times is a philosophical work written by Anthony Ashley Cooper, the third Earl of Shaftesbury, in the early 18th century. The book is divided into three parts, each of which explores different aspects of human nature and society. In the first part, Shaftesbury discusses the nature of man and his relationship to the world around him. He argues that human beings are inherently social creatures who are driven by a desire for happiness and a sense of moral duty. In the second part, he examines the role of manners and etiquette in society and how they can be used to promote virtue and social harmony. Finally, in the third part, he discusses the political and cultural climate of his time, offering his thoughts on the state of society and the need for reform. Throughout the book, Shaftesbury emphasizes the importance of reason, morality, and social responsibility in creating a just and harmonious society. His ideas had a significant influence on the Enlightenment and continue to be studied and discussed by philosophers and scholars today.1711. Two Volumes in One.
