在美國談論中國統一並不是一個新話題。自上個世紀90年代美國各個主要城市紛紛在當地註冊成立非盈利社團組織中國和平統一促進會 開始，就已經在各種不同場合正式地、公開地討論中國統一的話題。這個話題之所以敏感，其原因有二：
其一，老一輩的華僑當中，有許多人參加過保釣，也就是保衛釣魚島的運動。老保釣勇士們的結論是，只有一個強大的、統一的中國成為後盾，才可能在利益紛爭的國際環境中取得話語權。
其二，新一代的移民不願意看到美國和中國發生衝突或戰爭。臺灣是中國領土不可分割的一部分，中國絕不允許臺灣獨立出去。台獨最終將引起內戰。而戰爭很可能將美國拖進來，這是新移民所不願意看到的結果。因此，反對台獨分裂勢力成為關乎切身利益的選擇。同時，也符合美國政府一貫以來所奉行的一中政策。
在臺灣政黨輪替，實行文化台獨，法理台獨的蔡英文上臺後，台海局勢變得更加撲朔迷離。在這樣一個歷史節點，本書收集了在美國幾個城市，在2016年5月20日蔡英文就職演說前後一個時期內公開發表的文章和演講，這些資料為讀者展示了在美華人的一個重要側面。
