《恋人与铁》收录了杨典39篇短篇小说，整体而言除了延续《恶魔师》《鹅笼记》的部分气息外，本书的写作倾向主要来自对生命流逝或爱的焦虑，以及探究什么才是文学第一推动的问题。
恋人通常指的是人性中的罗生门、棱镜或移动的变压器，这个概念是私人的、隐秘的，同时也是反抗的，是属于大历史的名词。万事皆有理可循，唯爱情（恋人及对恋人的幻想）可以毫无道理--无端的爱，先验的爱，隐秘的爱，变态、畸恋、恶趣、绝望与毁灭的爱，乃至不分男女、不分动植物与时空异化的爱。在智力游戏与纯叙事化小说甚嚣尘上的时代，爱是个已腐烂的字。
