【秦可卿之死】──「隱去秦卿事，大發慈悲心」
俞平伯在《紅樓夢辨》裡特立專章，討論可卿之死（中卷，頁一五九至一七八）。但顧頡剛引《紅樓佚話》說有人見書中的焙茗，據他說，秦可卿與賈珍私通，被婢撞見，羞憤自縊死的。平伯深信此說，列舉了許多證據，並且指出秦氏的丫鬟瑞珠觸柱而死，可見撞見姦情的便是瑞珠。現在平伯的結論都被我的脂本證明了。

我當然很高興地走過去。祖韓讓我開啟整個手卷，仔細看了卷上的許多乾隆時代名人的題詠。那些題詠的口氣都是稱讚一位翰林前輩的話。皇八子的題詠更是絕對不像題一個窮愁潦倒的文人的小照的話。錢大昕、錢載、陳兆侖幾位大名士的手筆當然更引起了我的注意。
我看了那些題詠，我毫不遲疑地告訴李祖韓君：畫上的人別號雪芹，又稱雪琴，但不姓曹。這個人大概是一位翰林先生，大概還做過「上書房」的皇子師傅。那些題詠，沒有一篇可以叫我們相信題詠的對象是那位「於今環堵蓬蒿屯」，在貧病中發憤寫小說賣錢過活的曹雪芹。
【大千紅學】──考據甚少，多為附會！
《紅樓夢》的考證是不容易做的，一來因為材料太少，二來因為向來研究這部書的人都走錯了道路。他們怎樣走錯了道路呢？他們不去搜求那些可以考定《紅樓夢》的著者，時代，版本，等等的材料，卻去收羅許多不相干的零碎史事來附會《紅樓夢》裡的情節。他們並不曾做《紅樓夢》的考證，其實只做了許多《紅樓夢》的附會！
