抗戰爆發後，被日軍佔領的平津地區，活躍著一支由中學生自發組織的抗日團體--抗日殺奸團。他們多次在天津、北平發動爆炸、暗殺等除奸行動；組織遭日軍破壞後，行動轉向情報蒐集與動員知識階層脫離淪陷區。
這群少年多半出身高官貴戚、富商名門，非富即貴：北洋政府總理熊希齡的外孫女馮健美，北洋海軍總長劉冠雄將軍的孫子劉友深、劉友淦，外孫王文誠、王文鑒，偽滿總理鄭孝胥的孫子鄭統萬、鄭昆侖，第十一戰區司令長官孫連仲將軍的兒子孫湘德、女兒孫惠書......他們親自組織、策劃並執行了多起影響深遠、甚至引發中英日三國外交紛爭的暗殺行動。當年或傷或死於他們手中的漢奸，包括《新民報》編輯局局長吳菊癡、北平建設總署及總工局局長俞大純、教育局局長陶尚銘、天津商會會長王竹林、天津儲備銀行經理兼海關督查程錫庚等；川島芳子與周作人則是他們未能刺殺成功的目標。
如今，抗日殺奸團的成員已日漸凋零，這段歷史也鮮少為人所知。本書作者賴恩典自籌經費，歷時數年，奔赴北京、上海、美國與臺灣，找到並採訪了七位仍然在世的抗團成員，錄製下珍貴的視頻資料，並整理出三十餘萬字口述歷史，匯編成這本《逆流者》，為這段幾近失傳的歷史留下第一手見證。
而今，這七位老人中僅三位仍在臺灣，中國大陸已無抗團成員在世，全球在世的抗團成員也僅剩五位。
《逆流者》是賴恩典龐大口述史工程中的一部分。十五年來，他隻身走訪抗戰老兵及親歷者共170位，錄製740小時專業口述影像，整理出逾百萬字記錄。此後，他從這批材料中再次擷取、編成第二本書--《激流者：陸海空抗戰老兵口述》，記錄了五位陸海空、傘兵及軍事情報人員的生命歷程，是現有抗戰口述中極少觸及的珍貴內容。
