史钟麒生于1947年，1960年被选入刚创办的上海舞蹈学校（上海芭蕾舞团前身），是该校/团最早的演员。文革时期样板戏《白毛女》中男主角大春的扮演者之一。1979年，他被著名导演吴天明、腾文骥看中，在文革后第一部表现爱情的电影《生活的颤音》中扮演主角、小提琴家郑长河 ，随后成为极为活跃的舞、影、视三栖演员。1987年来美学习现代舞，因生计曾在纽约开设制衣厂，但很快又重返他热爱的芭蕾。
这部回忆录生动地记录了他与芭蕾相伴的一生。他以感激的心情，回忆了芭蕾带给他的快乐与伤痛，人生命运的考验与转折，也从局内人的视角，将上海芭蕾舞团早期的发展历程，《白毛女》创作、上演、成为样板戏的经过，包括周恩来、江青、张春桥、毛泽东对《白毛女》的态度和起到的作用，以及可与乒乓外交相媲美，为中日复交立下汗马功劳的芭蕾外交等历史事件呈现给了读者。
史钟麒现居旧金山湾区，一方面继续从事芭蕾教学，一方面以古稀之年，仍然活跃在湾区各种华人文艺演出的舞台上。
《革命时期的芭蕾》是壹嘉个人史系列丛书的第一部。该系列既可以是以个体经历为主的自叙传，也可以是由个人记录的历史人物与事件。本丛书意在留存个体、家族记忆，填补历史缝隙，探寻历史真相，同时，众多浸透悲欢离合、讲述成功失败的人生故事，亦有益于后人从中汲取教益，获得前行的动力与支持。
