作者的教学方法简单易懂。一个长圆形加上两个三角形的小耳朵和眼睛，就可以画出精神饱满的马头。这个马头再加上-个长方形的身体、四根柱形的马腿，这匹可爱的小马作品就完成了。
本书通过循序渐进、通俗易懂、一目了然的绘画教程，使得孩子在简单的绘画体验中能够尽快画出一匹马，促使孩子产生成就感，在不断地体验成功之后，逐渐增强绘画兴趣，下一步则是贵在坚持。长期的观察与体验是画马学习必不可少的功课。在观察中，让孩子了解马的千姿百态，与马近距离接触，培养对马的感情，通过观察、记忆与速写，不断画出各种姿态的马，是孩子学习画马的必经之路。
