When a malicious student, Mary Tilford, accuses the two women of having a lesbian relationship, their lives are turned upside down. The rumor spreads quickly, and the school and the community turn against them. The play explores themes of homophobia, gossip, and the power of lies. Hellman's work was groundbreaking for its time, as it was one of the first plays to openly address homosexuality.
