I Promessi Sposi or The Betrothed is a classic Italian novel by Alessandro Manzoni. This book is a part of the V21 Harvard Classics collection. It is a historical fiction novel set in 17th century Lombardy during the Spanish occupation. The story follows the lives of two young lovers, Renzo and Lucia, who are separated by a cruel and powerful nobleman, Don Rodrigo. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, religion, and social injustice. It is also a commentary on the political and social climate of Italy during the time. I Promessi Sposi is considered one of the most important works of Italian literature and has had a significant impact on the country's language and culture. This edition includes an introduction by the editor, Charles W. Eliot, and is translated into English.1909. This is in form an historical novel. It is rather psychological and sentimental. The scene is laid in Lombardy between 1628-1631, and the plot deals with the thwarting of the love of two peasants by a local tyrant. The manners of the time are presented with great vividness and picturesqueness. The novel has taken a place as the most distinguished novel of modern Italy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
