Cicero's Four Orations Against Catiline: Also The Oration For the Poet Archias, For The Manilian Law, And For Marcellus (1905) is a collection of speeches by the Roman statesman and orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero. The book includes four speeches delivered by Cicero against the conspirator Catiline, who was plotting to overthrow the Roman government. These speeches are considered some of Cicero's most famous and powerful works, as he passionately defends the Republic and denounces Catiline's treachery. In addition to the speeches against Catiline, the book also includes three other orations. The Oration For the Poet Archias is a defense of the Greek poet Archias, who was accused of falsely claiming Roman citizenship. The Oration For The Manilian Law is a speech in support of a law proposed by the consul Manilius, which would give Pompey command of the Roman army against Mithridates VI of Pontus. Finally, the Oration For Marcellus is a plea for clemency on behalf of Cicero's friend and supporter, Marcellus, who had been exiled from Rome. Overall, Cicero's Four Orations Against Catiline: Also The Oration For the Poet Archias, For The Manilian Law, And For Marcellus (1905) is a fascinating and historically significant collection of speeches by one of Rome's greatest orators. It provides a window into the political turmoil of the late Roman Republic and showcases Cicero's eloquence and rhetorical skill. With Explanatory Notes And A Vocabulary. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
