Shrimp represent one of the most ecologically and economically prominent groups within the subphylum Crustacea. They are distributed across nearly every aquatic environment on Earth, occupying marine, estuarine, and freshwater systems. As a group, shrimp exhibit remarkable diversity in size, morphology, habitat specialization, and behavioral ecology. Their presence ranges from shallow tidal pools along coastlines to deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems thousands of meters below the ocean surface. This adaptability has allowed shrimp to develop highly varied ecological roles that support the stability and productivity of aquatic ecosystems.
Shrimp belong primarily to two main infraorders: Caridea (true shrimp) and Dendrobranchiata (prawn-like shrimp). Although the term shrimp is widely used in daily language, it historically overlaps with the term prawn, leading to common confusion. Biologically, they differ in gill structure, body segmentation, and reproductive strategies, yet both groups share similar ecological functions.
