During the late 18th century, Medmenham Abbey was known for being a center of English Hellfire Club, a secret society devoted to debauchery and blasphemy. Joseph Townsend, a resident of the nearby Wood End, led a campaign to remove a stone altar erected in the parish church of Medmenham, which he believed was linked to the club's activities. This collection of letters sheds light on the controversy and the social tensions of the time.
