When Debbie Freeman turned fifteen, she collided with a wild bundle of energy called Zia Malangi. Together, they joined the dance and acting classes at their school and became inseparable for life. Soon after, Debbie took a bad fall and an unknown boy's scolding laughter caused her to flee the dance class forever.

Now twenty-one, Debbie and Zia have enjoyed successful acting careers leading all the way to London's West End. In a production called Dance, Sweet Heart, they are to perform in a play revolving around three friends caught in a love triangle. The lead male role has gone to the winner of a TV dance show, Jack Harrington: the cruel boy from six years earlier.

Debbie can act but not dance, while Jack can dance but not act. Entering an intense training regime, they are forced to teach each other how to perform. Over time, Debbie learns more about the man she hates and begins to see a gentler, more mature side to him. Resisting the possibility she has fallen in love with him, Debbie discusses the matter with Zia.

It is then she learns Zia's hatred for Jack runs deeper. When they were teenagers, Jack was Zia's first intimate partner and the damaging effects scarred her for life. Watching the mental breakdown of her best friend, Debbie fears she will have to choose between her blooming love for Jack and her eternal love for her surrogate sister.
