DEEP IN COUNTRY takes readers into the shadow war of the Vietnam conflict, where small teams of Green Berets, SOG recon men, and long-range patrols fought unseen battles along the edges of the map. While most histories focus on big-unit operations and politics in Saigon and Washington, this book follows the Americans and indigenous fighters who lived in remote jungle camps, crossed secret borders into Laos and Cambodia, and waged a covert war the government refused to admit was happening.
From the desperate night battle at Nam Dong in 1964, where twelve Green Berets and their allies held off a reinforced Viet Cong battalion, through the siege-scarred Special Forces camps on the border, to the high-risk SOG missions across the fence on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, each chapter is built around specific operations reconstructed from declassified reports, unit records, and veteran testimony. You will walk the wire with camp defenders under mortar fire, move silently with recon teams deep in triple-canopy jungle, and ride the helicopters that come in low under fire to pull shattered patrols out of denied areas.
Alongside the combat narrative, DEEP IN COUNTRY explains how the Special Forces, MACV-SOG, and LRRP/Ranger programs actually worked: how twelve-man A-teams built and led village militias, how SOG organized its secret war from forward bases in places like Da Nang and Kontum, and why small patrols became the eyes and ears for entire divisions. It traces the arc of the conflict from the early advisory years through Tet, Vietnamization, and the fall of Saigon, including a complete, integrated timeline of political, military, and special operations events from 1945 to 1975.
