Der Arme Heinrich (Poor Henry) is a Middle High German poem written by Hartmann von Aue, dating from around the 1190s. It tells the story of a wealthy and noble knight, Henry, who is struck by leprosy. Advised that he can only be cured by the heart's blood of a virgin who willingly sacrifices herself for him, Henry searches for such a person. He eventually finds a peasant girl who is willing to die for him out of compassion. The tale explores themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the nature of true nobility. This edition presents the classic story for a modern audience.
