Put on your hiking boots, a hat, and grab a water bottle, we're going to visit animals in deserts all over the world. Each animal has adaptations to live in that type of desert environment. Foxes have big ears to cool off. Skinks and snakes hide under the sand to stay out of the hot desert sun. Catfish can walk with their fins across the desert sand to reach the next oasis. There are as many different types of deserts in the world as there are animals. Each desert has little or no water for most of the year, and each animal fits perfectly into those unique environments: sandy, rocky, savanna, and even cold deserts.
Do you know the saying, Lions are the kings of the jungle? They actually live in a savanna that doesn't get much water most of the year. Tigers are the ones that live in the jungle!

And yes, fish swim in the desert. Meet the Devil's Hole pupfish. In the warm, rocky desert of Death Valley National Park, Nevada, USA, there's a limestone cave with water heated to 93 F (34 C) all year round. Whew! The water is part of an underground cave system, but the pupfish are only in the top part, eating algae off the rocks. They love the heat. What's even more interesting is that if an earthquake happens in California, it moves water to this cave in just a few minutes, from hundreds of miles away. Who would have thought there could be so much life with so little water?
