Down The Mother Lode is a novel written by Vivia Hemphill. The story takes place in the late 1800s in California during the Gold Rush. The main character, 14-year-old Lily, is forced to leave her home in San Francisco and travel to the Sierra Nevada mountains with her mother and younger brother in search of a better life. Along the way, they face many challenges, including harsh weather conditions, dangerous terrain, and encounters with bandits. Lily's mother becomes ill, leaving Lily to take care of her brother and find a way to survive. Lily is determined to strike it rich and find gold, but she soon learns that the real treasure is the bond she forms with her family and the people she meets along the way. The novel explores themes of family, resilience, and the pursuit of the American Dream.Everywhere in the foothills of the Sierras there are still evidences of gold mining. High cliffs face the rivers, all that is left of hills torn down at the point of the powerful hydraulic nozzles, with great heaps of cobbles at their base which Mother Nature, even in seventy years has been unable to change or cover. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
