Expressing a relieved sigh, he stepped through the front door of his house. A storm raged out there, rain coming in sideways. It clung to his beard and hair, soaked his clothes. But as soon as he crossed the doorway to his bungalow, delighted squeals greeted him. The giggle of a two-year-old's laughter painted a smile on Zahir Sayeed's tired face.
Let the storm rage outside the house. Inside, it was cozy and filled with the love of his daughter and his wife. Zahir shook off the rain and swooped the toddler scooting toward him into his arms. The joy of coming home to this adorable toddler every day warmed him to the core. How had it been two years already since their adoption had been finalized?
Abba is home, he said and covered her in kisses.
His daughter shrieked in delight, her giggles filling his heart. He lifted her onto his shoulders.
Where is Mommy? Let's see if we can find her.
The bubbles of joy continued as he lowered to a crouch - his thighs burning with the extra weight on his back - and stalked through the house.
Oh, Mommy, he called, his voice rising and falling in song.
Naera directed him by pulling on a tuft of hair in each hand, this way and that. All the while, the baby howled with laughter.
Mommy, Fatima Sayeed, was apparently hiding in a good spot. Zahir and Naera walked into the kitchen - no Fatima. He proceeded to look in the cabinets, simply because he loved hearing his daughter's expression of happiness.
They finally found her, hiding with the broom. A string of unintelligible words came from Naera, and Zahir's insides warmed further, in a completely different manner, at the sight of his lovely wife. Although she looked a little tired, she was still the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. He swooped her into his embrace with much flair. Her arms found their way around his waist, closing any distance. Fatima buried her face in his chest with a deep sigh of contentment.
You're finally home. We've been waiting all afternoon.
A smile pinched the skin around his eyes. Why?
Fatima cuffed his side. We've got a cake for you, silly. And Naera has a present.
Again, why?
Naera's words never came out clearly. She made baby noises even though she was over two years old. But today, she piped in from on top of his shoulders and a clear, Abba b-day, slipped out of her mouth.
The room stilled, only the sound of the rain pounding on the metal roof could be heard. Or maybe it was his heart. His daughter had spoken a word.
Fatima's silver eyes filled with tears as she turned away from both of them. Zahir didn't miss a beat. He slapped his forehead in mock shock.
I completely forgot.
