Sailing a small boat across the Atlantic, I set out to trace the route of Christopher Columbus-and uncovered a story more astonishing than I ever imagined.
In Rabbis of the Caribbean, I explore a little-known chapter of history: how the voyage of Columbus, so often reduced to conquest and colonization, also became a lifeline for Jews fleeing extermination under the Spanish Inquisition.
In 1492, as Spain expelled its Jewish population and the Inquisition unleashed terror, many Jews were forced into exile. Some converted in public while practicing their faith in secret. Others took a more daring path: they took to the sea.
This book follows two intertwined journeys:
My own Atlantic crossing in a small boat, retracing Columbus's route
And the incredible odyssey of the Sephardic Jews who escaped by ship to the New World
Many of these Jewish exiles became traders, settlers, and in some cases, pirates. Driven by the need to survive, and sometimes by a thirst for revenge against their Spanish persecutors, they found freedom on the high seas. Some even amassed fortunes raiding the very empire that had cast them out.
From secret synagogues in Caribbean outposts to the legends of Jewish pirates of the West Indies, this is a journey through forgotten maps, hidden identities, and the resilience of a people determined to survive.
The story is so incredible, it demands to be told. I only hope I've done it justice.
