The trajectory of German naval aviation was defined by an early institutional rejection of fixed-wing aircraft in favor of the Zeppelin, a preference that created a technological path dependency from which the Navy could not easily escape. By the time the limitations of the airship became undeniable following the Battle of Jutland (Skagerrak) and the subsequent technological maturation of Allied carrier-based fighters, the German industrial base was too overextended to support a capital ship program that competed with the desperate demands of the U-boat arm. The eventual cancellation of the SMS Ausonia project in 1918, alongside the aborted conversions of the cruisers SMS Stuttgart and SMS Roon, marked the end of an era of German naval ambition that would not be resumed until the ill-fated Graf Zeppelin project of the 1930s.

Die Entwicklung der deutschen Marinefliegerei war ma geblich von einer frühen institutionellen Ablehnung von Starrflügelflugzeugen zugunsten von Zeppelinen geprägt. Diese Präferenz schuf eine technologische Pfadabhängigkeit, der sich die Marine nur schwer entziehen konnte. Als die Grenzen der Luftschiffe nach der Skagerrakschlacht und der anschlie enden technologischen Weiterentwicklung der alliierten Trägerflugzeuge unübersehbar wurden, war die deutsche Industrie bereits so stark ausgelastet, dass sie kein Gro schiffprogramm mehr unterstützen konnte, das mit den dringenden Anforderungen der UBoot-Waffe konkurrierte. Die endgültige Einstellung des Ausonia-Projekts im Jahr 1918 sowie die abgebrochenen Umbauten der Kreuzer SMS Stuttgart und SMS Roon markierten das Ende einer Ära deutscher Marineambitionen, die erst mit dem unglückseligen Graf-Zeppelin-Projekt der 1930er-Jahre wieder aufgenommen wurden.
