Fairy tales have always held a special place in my heart, evoking cherished memories of the enchanting bedtime stories my grandmother would share with us as children. Growing up in India, our nights were often filled with tales of magic, adventure, and moral lessons that have stayed with me throughout my life. My grandmother, who was a product of the British Raj, had a remarkable gift for storytelling, and her ability to weave tales that transcended religious, cultural, and social boundaries left a lasting impression on me. Her stories often combined elements of both Hindu, Muslim and other traditions, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of our nation while still presenting a universal message of kindness, courage, and resilience.
This book, Fairy Stories from India, is a collection of the most memorable tales from my childhood-stories that have left an indelible mark on my imagination and understanding of the world. In India, storytelling has traditionally been passed down through a rich oral tradition, making it challenging to attribute these narratives to any one source. Each tale you will find here is a reflection of that tradition, with its origins deeply rooted in the collective consciousness of Indian culture. While these stories maintain the essence of the originals, they have been adapted for a modern audience, ensuring they align with the values and acceptable standards of today. Some details have been revised to focus on the core morals and values rather than the darker elements that were common in older versions of these tales.
It is also important to note that many traditional stories often advocate for a particular nationality, religion, or social hierarchy. However, the stories in this collection are unique in that they reflect the secular outlook my grandmother adopted, influenced by the British Raj's emphasis on maintaining a harmonious society. Although these tales feature characters from both Hindu, Muslim or other backgrounds, they are presented from a religiously neutral perspective. Any references to God or divine intervention in these stories are intended to be inclusive, representing a universal figure that children of all backgrounds can recognise and relate to.
In preparing this book, I have made efforts to ensure that these stories resonate with today's young readers, aged 4 to 12, by carefully updating the language and context where necessary. For instance, references to traditional ranks and societal roles have been converted to their English equivalents, and footnotes have been provided to clarify cultural nuances. My goal is to make these timeless stories accessible and relatable to children everywhere, while preserving the enchanting spirit and moral lessons that have endured through generations. May these tales spark curiosity, foster imagination, and offer a glimpse into the vibrant world of Indian folklore.
