The objective of this research is to analyse the thinking of Fernando Henrique Cardoso (FHC) in order to understand his view of underdeveloped nations and his theory of dependency, with a view to understanding the consequences of his thinking for Brazil and, in particular, for the Brazilian Amazon region. Considering that geographical penetration in the Amazon and the history of the region are part of the overall process of capitalist expansion, due to the form, pace and volume of accumulation that also occurred in other regions of Brazil (and outside it), we must study it in this way, showing that it is part of a whole. This will enable us to understand Cardoso's actions as president, especially in relation to this important region. The discussion will address the social function of business and the various facets of underdevelopment. The project was carried out with the support of the Pacific and Amazon Research Centre (NPPA) and under the guidance of Professor Enrique Amayo Zevallos.
