The fourth book in the great Kenyan family saga, told against a background of true historical events. William Shrimes came to Kenya in 1939 with little money but a dream. He wanted to build a farm. He painstakingly made it happen - the Shrimes farm came into being. It has been a hard road, fighting racial barriers as much as the Mau Mau menace. He has buried friends and enemies, his wife and daughter. He has since transferred parts of his farm back to the Kikuyu. His son James lives nearby, but contact has almost completely broken off, as he is investigating for a British special unit. Only the alleged quarrel between father and son can protect William from being murdered. Their meetings have to be clandestine. William looks forward to his 84th birthday in 2007. Now he is experiencing discrimination first hand, the disintegration of his family, and how the country that became his home is collapsing in the political turmoil. He is hurt not only by illness, the loss of his beloved wife, and fear for James, but especially by meanness, intolerance, stupidity, lies and greed. He asks himself: Was this my dream of Africa?
