When The Battlefield of Reform closed, Florence had won her greatest political battle: Parliament had recognized the desperate need for health reform and sanitation. But victories come at a cost, and Florence - frail from years of illness - begins The Legacy of Light with her body weakened but her spirit aflame.
Determined not to let her work die with her, Florence sets her sights on a new dream: the founding of the Nightingale Training School for Nurses. In the face of skepticism, ridicule, and resistance from those who still consider nursing unsuitable for women of good standing, Florence pushes forward. With the help of allies, benefactors, and her unwavering faith, she builds a foundation that will outlast her lifetime.
The first students arrive - young, uncertain, full of hope. In them, Florence sees the future. Yet the work is not easy. Discipline is rigorous, the standards exacting. Many resist, others falter, but those who remain become her torchbearers. Through them, the light of Scutari and the Crimean War spreads across England - and soon, across the globe.

Florence's influence refuses to remain confined to London. Letters arrive from India, America, and Europe, pleading for her guidance. Though confined to her room more often than not, she becomes an international presence.

Yet Florence's later years are not without trial. Bureaucrats still resist reform. Critics mock trained nurses as unwomanly. Her own family, strained by years of distance, questions the sacrifices she made. At times she wonders if she gave too much - love, family, comfort - in exchange for her mission.
But letters of gratitude pour in: soldiers whose lives were saved by her methods, families who thank her for clean wards and healthy children, nurses who claim her as mentor. Each message reminds Florence that her sacrifices were not in vain.
The Weight of Years
As illness confines her more often to her bed, Florence shifts her focus from action to mentoring. She pours her wisdom into the next generation, guiding young nurses who will carry the flame when she no longer can. To them she gives her most important lesson:
