Dans un monde corrompu, immoral et dénué d'éthique, le personnage principal, Amir, demande à son ami plus âgé, Atef, de l'accompagner dans un voyage vers l'Istanbul contemporaine, à la recherche du Candide de Voltaire, censé cultiver son jardin en Anatolie. Pourquoi Candide ? Parce qu'il avait déjà triomphé d'un monde malhonnête et pervers, et qu'il serait sans doute capable de le faire à nouveau. Atef sait qu'Amir est malade; il accepte donc de partir, n'ayant rien à perdre: veuf à la retraite, il traîne son désoeuvrement, désabusé par la révolution égyptienne de janvier 2011.
À Istanbul, ils rencontrent Ali, un expatrié libanais, qui les guide à travers le Bosphore jusqu'à l'Anatolie actuelle. À leur grande stupéfaction, ils croisent un derviche dont le voisin correspond à la description de Candide, un homme qui ne vieillit jamais ! Mais hélas, ce dernier vient de quitter la Turquie à la recherche de vrais croyants qui embrassent d'autres confessions. Il a choisi la Malaisie, pays où cohabitent de nombreuses religions.
À Kuala Lumpur, ils acquièrent la certitude que Candide existe bel et bien, mais apprennent qu'il est parti encore plus à l'est, vers la Thaïlande. Leur quête les mène ensuite à Bangkok, puis à Budapest, où ils font la connaissance d'une femme aveugle, Sisi, une musicienne qui joue du violon devant leur hôtel. Pour une rémunération quotidienne, elle accepte de les accompagner dans leur recherche. Lorsqu'un prêtre local leur apprend que Candide a pris la direction de Prague, elle consent à poursuivre le périple avec eux.
L'odyssée se poursuit à Vienne, en Allemagne, à Paris, puis à Rome. Au Vatican, ils rencontrent le pape et, à leurs yeux ébahis, apparaissent Candide et son épouse Cunégonde, debout à ses côtés. Mais, une fois encore, Candide leur échappe. Le souverain pontife et ses prélats leur conseillent alors de se rendre dans les déserts d'Égypte, où ils trouveront peut-être leurs vrais croyants parmi les moines du désert.
Parviendront-ils enfin à retrouver Candide en Égypte, leur point de départ, ou celui-ci continuera-t-il à leur échapper ?
