Depuis vingt ans, l'auto-autochtonisation de Blancs, plus particulièrement de Franco-descendants du Canada (et des États-Unis) qui se servent d'une ancêtre née au 17e siècle pour revendiquer une identité autochtone contemporaine, connaît un essor sans précédent. Les données de recensement sont révélatrices le taux de croissance du nombre de personnes s'identifiant comme Métis au Québec, en Nouvelle-Écosse et au Nouveau-Brunswick a de loin dépassé celui des personnes s'identifiant comme Métis à l'échelle nationale.
Cette étude ne porte pas sur les personnes qui ont été dépossédées de leur identité par des politiques coloniales, ni sur les efforts menés par celles-ci sur plusieurs générations pour renouer avec leur communauté. Elle vise plutôt à déconstruire le phénomène de l'auto-autochtonisation en s'attardant aux causes, aux mécanismes et aux objectifs cachés de ce processus de réinvention identitaire, révélant ainsi la vision biologisante et racisante qui le sous-tend. L'ouvrage présente des pratiques généalogiques ou génétiques exploitées pour justifier cette nouvelle identité métisse, puis analyse les idéologies et les revendications politiques des deux principales organisations de Métis de l'Est au Québec.
Au fil des discours et des pratiques d'ascendance qu'elle expose, cette étude permet d'appréhender les conséquences de l'auto-autochtonisation sur l'autodétermination et la souveraineté autochtones. Surtout, elle montre que les efforts menés par les Franco-descendants pour brouiller les limites entre blanchité et autochtonité s'inscrivent dans une longue histoire de domination coloniale.
