My first novel, The Regretful Tale of a Travelling Stand-up Comedian, was rather successful. After a long-lasting misery of years of odd jobs, of living in contempt and economic insecurity, I was seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Then something happened that wrecked it all. Fucking bad news. No warning. One morning, the doorbell rings. I quickly put on a shirt and rush to the door where I find my downstairs neighbour naked, holding a .45. I didn't think, I just tried to take it away from her. I should have known better: the gun went off and the bullet hit me in the leg. Then she commanded me to drive her to the countryside. She wanted me to pay for it. But for what? I was mystified. Plus she seemed to have lost her memory. She was in a pretty sorry state, and I had gotten myself in a bad situation. I had done time in prison, but since my release I had managed to stay out of trouble. Change of life. Forget about stickups and concentrate on writing. My first novel was a hit and yet there I was, having to deal with a deranged girl, my ex girlfriend, the police, my lawyer, and a bunch of thugs, real punks. Unbelievable.
