Les grenouilles Pacman (genre Ceratophrys) sont célèbres pour leur allure ronde, leur tête massive et leur appétit spectaculaire. Ce sont des grenouilles puissantes, opportunistes et parfois agressives, qui passent beaucoup de temps immobiles à attendre la proie idéale. Elles peuvent être maintenues en captivité par des débutants sérieux, mais seulement si l'environnement, l'alimentation et la manipulation sont gérés correctement. Ce guide a été conçu pour aider tout gardien responsable à offrir à une grenouille Pacman une vie stable, propre et sécurisée.
Le livre commence par présenter l'animal. Vous découvrirez le comportement typique d'une Ceratophrys: une grenouille plutôt stationnaire, enterrée ou semi-enterrée, prête à bondir pour capturer sa nourriture d'un mouvement extrêmement rapide. Vous apprendrez à reconnaître une grenouille Pacman détendue (corps bien rond, regard alerte, respiration calme) et à distinguer les signes de stress ou de faiblesse comme l'amaigrissement, le refus de se nourrir, ou la léthargie prolongée.
L'habitat est expliqué étape par étape. Contrairement aux espèces arboricoles, la grenouille Pacman n'a pas besoin de hauteur pour grimper, mais d'un espace de sol sûr, légèrement humide et confortable pour s'enfouir. Le guide détaille le type de terrarium adapté, le substrat approprié pour permettre cet enfouissement sans blesser l'animal, l'importance d'une humidité contrôlée, et la façon d'éviter les surfaces glissantes ou dures qui peuvent causer des irritations cutanées ou des blessures au ventre.
L'humidité et la température sont présentées comme des paramètres vitaux. Vous apprendrez comment maintenir une humidité suffisamment élevée pour soutenir la peau et la respiration sans créer un milieu détrempé propice aux moisissures ou aux infections. Vous verrez comment établir un gradient thermique simple et stable, et pourquoi les variations brutales de température fatiguent rapidement l'animal.
