Qui était Henri Curiel, abattu à Paris le 4 mai 1978 par deux tueurs non identifiés? Le patron des réseaux d'aide au terrorisme, à la solde du KGB, comme l'hebdomadaire Le Point l'avait annoncé en couverture? Un agent des services israéliens, comme l'affirma l'agence de presse soviétique Novosti? Un agent français, comme le croient toujours les services cubains?
La réalité est plus passionnante. Elle mena ce fils d'un riche banquier juif cairote du palais paternel aux geôles de Farouk, roi d'Egypte, puis à l'exil forcé en 1950. Henri Curiel, engagé au service d'un peuple enfoncé dans la misère, avait ressuscité le parti communiste égyptien et fondé le parti communiste soudanais.
Réfugié en France, apatride, il fut diffamé et renié par les communistes français, ce qui n'entama pas la confiance d'une petite cohorte de fidèles, venus comme lui d'Egype et qui allaient le suivre dans tous ses engagements. Avec eux, il milite dans les réseaux d'aide au FLN algérien, dont il prend la direction à la suite de Francis Jeanson. Arrété, emprisonné, Henri Curiel crée après la fin de la guerre d'Algérie une extraordinaire organisation clandestine, Solidarité, qui aide puissamment les mouvements de libération du tiers-monde. Premier artisan du dialogue israélo-palestinien, il consacre les dernières années de sa vie à un réglement pacifique du conflit.
Ainsi le parcours de cet homme à part, tels ceux d'un Nelson Mandela ou d'un Che Guevara, illustre-t-il l'histoire de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, qui restera comme celle de l'immense mouvement de décolonisation et d'émancipation qui a changé la face de la planète.
Dans cette édition mise à jour, Gilles Perrault rapporte les événements intervenus depuis la première publication, en 1984, et notamment les étranges péripéties de l'enquête menée pour découvrir l'identité des assassins d'Henri Curiel et de leurs commanditaires.
Il rend justice à un homme qui a suscité haine et passion, et qui demeura, jusqu'à en mourir, fidèle à l'idéal de sa jeunesse.
