La Légion étrangère attire les fantasmes depuis plus d'un siècle. Bir Hakeim, Indochine, Djibouti, Kolwezi, Tchad, Liban, Somalie, Rwanda, Bosnie, Afghanistan, Mali, Levant: les théâtres changent, les ennemis changent, les contraintes changent. Une constante demeure pourtant: la Légion intervient dans des conflits où le courage tactique ne suffit jamais à résoudre l'équation stratégique.
Chaque chapitre reconstitue une opération dans sa logique propre: le contexte politique, les objectifs fixés, les forces engagées, les contraintes du terrain, le déroulement réel de l'action et les résultats observables. L'ambition de ce livre est simple: montrer ce que produit, concrètement, l'engagement d'unités de combat professionnelles dans les guerres modernes.
Le lecteur y découvrira une réalité souvent plus rugueuse que la légende: des mandats ambigus, des victoires locales qui ne règlent rien, des succès militaires enfermés dans des impasses politiques, des missions extérieures où l'efficacité se mesure parfois moins en terrain conquis qu'en crise contenue, en catastrophe évitée ou en effondrement retardé.
