Emmanuel Kant naquit à Koenigsberg en Prusse le 22 avril 1724. En 1740 il entra à l'Université de Koenigsberg . En 1746, âgé d'environ 22 ans il écrivit sa première oeuvre sur une question demi-mathématique et demi-philosophique: l'Evaluation des forces vives. Bien qu'imprimée, je crois, elle ne fut jamais publiée. Depuis ce moment jusqu'en 1770, Kant vécut comme précepteur auprès de différentes familles, ou en donnant des conférences privées à Koenigsberg, particulièrement aux militaires sur l'art de la fortification. En 1770, il fut nommé à la chaire de mathématiques, qu'il échangea bientôt après contre celle de logique et de métaphysique. En 1781, il publia sa grande oeuvre: Die Kritik der Reinen Vernunft ou Examen critique de la Raison pure. Il mourut le 12 février 1804 à Koenigsberg Telles sont les grandes époques de la vie de Kant. Mais cette vie fut remarquable non point tant pour ses incidents que pour la pureté et la dignité philosophiques de sa teneur journalière. Mesuré à une seule évaluation du pouvoir - au nombre des livres écrits directement pour ou contre lui, pour ne rien dire de ceux qu'il a indirectement modifiés - il n'y a point d'écrivain philosophique, si l'on excepte Aristote, Descartes et Locke, qui puisse prétendre approcher de Kant par l'étendue et la hauteur d'influence qu'il a exercée sur les esprits des hommes.
