You can step into The Great Intrigue, a series of novels in five tomes, through several different doors, and this penultimate volume (like the final one which will be published in August), is perfectly accessibly to readers unfamiliar with its predecessors. The characters, their circumstances and actions are revealed gradually... as in life itself.
In this book, as with the previous ones, the chronology is fragmented, and the author says that he had to go beyond the timeframe he had set for himself (approximately the second half of the Twentieth Century). Here, then, he plays at telescoping time, evoking the First World War and its effects on the Maudon, Herdoin and Rubien families as readily as a Parisian orgy attended by Nicolas Rubien and his cousin and partner, Louise Herdoin, an occasion that takes him back to the Book of Genesis and the Judeo-Christian myth of the Fall of Man. He talks also of generation gaps, such as when Gregory Rubien initiates his grandfather, François - a retired war veteran - to the secrets of a television programme, Cool Quartier, a cross between Loft Story and Plus belle la vie (the author has had fun forging a new concept in trash TV).
You could just as easily come across a Chinese businessman, the world's number one for internet dating sites who invents a new universal language, Unilogue... as the anxious meditations of a curate in Vernery-sur-Arre as he watches Catholicism collapse. But the way the chapters resonate with each other clearly demonstrates that they are all about the same world, a world where the legacies of the past still weigh surreptitiously on the living, and where advances and developments sometimes flirt with absurd and require just as much investigation.
After Anielka (Stock, 1999) which won the Grand Prix for a novel from the Académie française, and Le cas Gentile, François Taillandier went on to write an ambitious panorama spanning five generations in contemporary France. An exciting and innovative cycle of novels, three of which have already been published: Option paradis, Telling and Il n'y a personne dans les tombes.
The final volume, Time to turn, will be published in August 2010.
