Les vingt et une nouvelles qui le composent, sont assez disparates et la plupart ont été rééditées ensuite, après avoir été remaniées. Chaque nouvelle est dédiée à un ami de l'écrivain - Zola, Maupassant, Huysmans... -, la nouvelle elle-même étant parfois écrite à la manière de.... On y voit déjà transparaître le pessimisme de Mirbeau et la férocité de ses descriptions, tant du monde paysan que de la bourgeoisie. Les Lettres de ma chaumière sont le pendant des Lettres de mon moulin d'Alphonse Daudet, que Mirbeau avait beaucoup critiqué pour son côté édulcoré, et pour avoir plagié d'autres auteurs.
